Veteran Discounts That Actually Work (And How to Claim Them)
Twin Guides · Veterans · 5 min read
Written by a disabled veteran who got tired of leaving money on the table. Most “veteran discount” lists online are padded with expired offers. This is the practical version: what works, and the one verification step that unlocks most of it.
Step 1: Verify once with ID.me
ID.me is the key that opens almost everything. Verify your service once at id.me — it takes about 10 minutes with your DD214 or VA records — and hundreds of stores recognize it instantly at online checkout. No more digging out paperwork at every register.
Discounts worth claiming
Home improvement: Lowe's and Home Depot both offer 10% to enrolled veterans — on appliances and materials that adds up fast.
Phone plans: Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile all have veteran/military plan discounts — typically 15–25% off qualifying plans. You have to ask and enroll; they will never apply it on their own.
Clothing & shoes: Nike, Under Armour, Carhartt and many more run 10–20% via ID.me at checkout.
Restaurants: many chains give 10% — but it's franchise by franchise. Ask; the worst answer is no.
Software: Microsoft 365 and others offer military pricing — worth checking before any subscription renewal.
The ones veterans miss most
Property tax breaks: most states give disabled veterans a partial or full property-tax exemption — some at 100% disability waive it entirely. Call your county assessor. This is often the single biggest one on this page.
Vehicle registration/plates: many states cut or waive fees for disabled vets.
State park passes: frequently free or deeply discounted for veterans.
VA health care + prescriptions: if you're not enrolled, that's potentially thousands a year. Start at va.gov or call 1-877-222-8387.
Rule of thumb: companies rarely volunteer these. The discount exists at the register, on the phone, and at the assessor's office — but it only pays the people who ask.
